美国青椒发愁【备课】社会学理论课程：9条建议和22页文献

Dan Hirschman是个刚毕业的青椒，要去Brown教《古典社会学理论》
——这是他第一年研究生课程，到底要怎么准备呢？
——教哪些人？
——各家理论轻重如何？
于是，在博客上向大家请教，一些美国社会学老师来帮助他理清思路，提供自己的经验。
他的想法是从美国的古典社会学理论家DuBois开始（借助Morris’ ），然后讲一讲“方法的历史”（history of method）以及“howcan we know the social world?”。为此，他也想用Ian Hacking的《驯服偶然》来谈谈涂尔干，以及定量社会科学是怎么兴起的。（他的博士论文是《如何停止对GDP的焦虑...》（？））

各路的老师回复很热情，有9点有意思的：
1. 多数的组合是：
In my classicaltheory course we covered, along with Marx/Weber/Durkheim/DuBois: Simmel, Mead,Comte, Spencer. I would add an agreement to Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau.
2. 虽然有老师注意要从Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau这些讲起，但也有老师担心，讲这些太古老的只是soundbite而已。
3.还是重视美国的传统，要讲一些美国的古典社会学理论家，像DuBois and Jane Addams.
4. 虽然有老师指出要将当代的案例融入到古典理论的教学中，但也有担心，这样会导致学生有时空错位的麻烦。
5 值得关注的是，这些老师谈到教学，有很强的文本导向，要读哪些特定的文本，比如韦伯、涂尔干。
例如，Tony Waters推荐
——I use Bellah’s reader for Durkheim On Morality and Societyhas “The Spirit of 1789” and “The Dualism of Human Nature” in it, which areoften overlooked.
——With Weber, themost overlooked essay is “Discipline and Charisma”.
——W.E. B DuBois is a great idea. His essay on “Sorrow Songs ofthe South” in particular deserves a careful read–it is about the “hiddentranscripts.”
——Tocqueville’s essay “Future Condition of the Three Races thatInhabit the Territory of the United States” is an excellent lead in to DuBois.

Ruth Benedict (1934) Patterns of Culture
Ralph Linton (1936). The Study of Man
John Dollard (1937) Caste and Class in aSouthern Town

9. 最有趣的是，最后一条回复，来自【欧洲】的研究生，说自己在欧洲接受的社会学理论教育是这样的：
First week of myundergraduate sociologal theory (1st year, European university) started withseveral articles, including Stinchcombe’s “mothers and fathers” from 1982,Seidman’s “beyond presentinm and historicism” from 1983, Connel’s “why isclassical theory classical” from 1997 (and couple others I don’t remember fromthe top of my head, probably Giddens and Alexander?).
不过，最后他的问题：…..
Regardingnon-sociology background I know that some European programs require that you passcouple of compulsory courses after being admitted, or comprehensive Soc exambefore being admitted. I don’t know why US programs don’t do something likethat – it would make it easier and more productive for everybody?
